Outhouse East
We are here to offer support and information to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people of Essex. Based in Colchester town centre we provide a range of services and groups free of charge.
Whatever is going on for you, from counselling to health advice, from homophobia and transphobia reporting information to legal advice, from housing to employment, we may have the thing you need to make life a little better. We also offer social and support groups for women, men and young people.

Coming Soon
In 2011 we conducted an Essex wide survey of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people. It was the first time at this scale that LGBT people had been asked their opinion on a whole range of topics, from health care to employment, from housing to hate crime and policing.
We will be launching the finding from this piece of work and learning what needs to be done to improve lives for LGBT people in Essex.
When published the document will be made available both as an on-line PDF and in hard copy.
We plan to launch the survey with an event in early spring. If you would like to be on the invitation list for that event please get in touch: info@theouthouse.org.uk (put survey in the subject line)

Ofsted introduce new guidelines for schools
This month sees the new Ofsted framework brought into action for schools across the country. For the first time school inspection focuses on the needs of lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils as a specific group and makes reference to prejudice-based bullying relating to sexual orientation.
We are happy to work with any school who may wish some support and guidance in how best to work with this new framework. For more information check our training page or contact us info@theouthouse.org.uk

"I Exist" - Survey
This survey covers a range of issues affecting lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people, from health to homophobia and relationships to legal rights.
It will take around 15 minutes to complete, but the answers you give will be used to sustain and improve services for LGB people. It is vitally important that as LGB people we stand up for our needs and experiences, and have them acknowledged by decision makers. In return for your time, there is the chance to win some fantastic prizes, including £500 worth of holiday vouchers, an iPad 2 or £100 worth of shopping vouchers!
The 2011 National Census was carried out to gather information necessary to planning and improving service provision across the country. But there was no question asking about sexual orientation. This means there is still a lack of evidence about LGB people. It is important that we are confident to make our needs and experiences heard, and to fight discrimination faced by lesbian, gay and bisexual people because of our sexual orientation. We need to stand up and be counted.

The Part of the Picture (POTP) research project is a five-year partnership between The Lesbian & Gay Foundation (LGF) and the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).
POTP has three main aims:
- The establishment of an England-wide database of lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people’s drug and alcohol use.
- The use of the database to directly inform local and national policy and practice in addressing the drug and alcohol use of LGB people.
- An improved knowledge and understanding of the needs of LGB drug and alcohol users amongst drug and alcohol agencies, through dissemination of the research findings.
